Dental Hygiene Care

Dental Hygiene is crucial to your overall health. We recommend our patients visit our office twice a year to ensure their optimal oral health and to avoid serious and costly issues in the future. During a routine cleaning, the hygienist will scale and polish your teeth, provide fluoride treatment, take necessary x-rays and provide oral hygiene instructions. During a dental exam the Dentist will perform an oral cancer screening and discuss findings and concerns you may have.

Plaque is the bacteria that your dental hygienist will remove from your teeth during your dental hygiene appointment. It is a film bacterium that forms on your teeth and gums after eating foods that produce acids. These foods may include carbohydrates (sugars and starches) such as candy, cookies, bread, crackers, and cereal.

When plaque remains on your teeth for an extended period of time the tooth may start to decay which can lead to cavities, allowing the bacteria to ‘eat away’ at the surfaces of your teeth and gums. Plaque can also lead to gum irritation, soreness, and redness. Sometimes your gums may begin to bleed. This gradual degeneration can often cause gums to pull away from teeth. This condition is called receding gums. Long-term plaque can lead to serious problems. The bacteria can also form pockets of disease around tooth structures that will eventually destroy the bone beneath the tooth. This is why it is important to see the dental hygienist on a regular basis.

Extractions

The most common type of extraction offered at our clinics is wisdom teeth removal. In most cases, wisdom teeth will grow in an uncomfortable way that may add pressure to the teeth causing pain. In most cases regarding orthodontic work, it is suggested to remove wisdom teeth to avoid complication with completed treatment. In other situations, the Dentist may suggest extraction if there is deep decay in a tooth or a serious infection has occurred, that cannot be healed.

A root canal is when the nerve inside the tooth, also known as the pulp, is infected from erosion of the tooth enamel. An infection inside the tooth is not treatable. However, the Dentist can clean out and fill the root. Proper brushing, flossing and regular visits to your Dentist can help avoid the symptoms of an infected root.

Signs and symptoms of an infection:

  • Severe, persistent, throbbing toothache
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures that linger
  • Sensitivity to the pressure of chewing or biting
  • Fever
  • Swelling in your face or cheek
  • Tenderness or swelling of the gums surrounding the tooth
  • Darkening of the tooth

If you have any of these symptoms please contact us to book an appointment and one of our Dentists will be happy to help.

Tooth Colored Bonded Fillings

Tooth-Colored (Or “Natural”) Composite Restorations

Unlike metal or amalgam fillings, bonded white fillings contain zero mercury or amalgam. They are made of a composite resin that is tough, durable, and natural looking. Once bonded to your tooth’s structure, these composite restorations restore, strengthen, and protect your tooth from further damage. Bonded fillings can also be custom matched to the natural shade of your tooth which ensures attractive looking results.

Bonded fillings can usually be placed within a single appointment which makes them a popular option for patients. Once the decayed portion is removed, the tooth is cleaned and dried. The composite resin is then applied and molded until the desired shape is achieved. A special UV light is used to create a secure bond between the filling and the tooth. Within an hour, you will have a completely restored healthier tooth.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)

TMD is a condition that occurs when there are imbalances with the temporomandibular joint that connects your skull to your lower jaw. Imbalanced or issues with the joint can occur for a number of reasons, such as injury, genetics, or stress.

Common TMD symptoms include:

  • Problems opening your jaw or moving it from side to side
  • Pain in your jaw, face or neck
  • Ear-related problems, such as pain, hearing loss, or ringing
  • Migraines or headaches to the temporal area
  • Nighttime grinding or clenching of your teeth
  • Tiredness throughout the day

Depending on the underlying cause, TMD symptoms can vary from person to person. Thus, the first step to relieving your TMD pain is by finding the root cause. If your TMD pain is caused by stress, we will try to find ways to reduce it; however, if it’s caused by an injury, surgery may be needed. For this reason, a complete diagnosis is needed to allow us to have a complete understanding of your condition. Once we have discovered the root cause of your TMD, we can start to resolve it and find ways to relieve your TMD pain for the long term. Depending on your case, your treatment plan may include practitioners from other fields, such as massage therapists, physiotherapists, and chiropractors.

Our dental specialists will work with you to find an effective, long lasting solution for your TMD pain. Contact our office to set up an appointment today.

Digital Radiography

Our office uses (digital X-rays) to better detect, diagnose, treat, and monitor oral conditions and diseases.

Digital radiography is a type of X-ray imaging that uses digital X-ray sensors to replace traditional photographic X-ray film, producing enhanced computer images of teeth, gums, and other oral structures and conditions.

Digital dental images are acquired through three methods: the direct method, indirect method and semi-indirect method. The direct method uses an electronic sensor placed in the mouth to record images. The indirect technique uses an X-ray film scanner to view traditional dental X-rays as digital images. The semi-indirect digital technique combines a sensor and scanner to convert dental X-rays into digital film.
