Dental Care for Kids
From a first look at baby teeth to regular cleanings for school-age kids and teens, we offer the everyday care children need to keep their smiles healthy.
Checkups & Cleanings
Regular visits let us catch cavities early, gently clean away buildup and show your child how to brush and floss well.
Fluoride Treatment
A quick, painless fluoride varnish helps strengthen tooth enamel and lower the risk of cavities.
Dental Sealants
Thin protective coatings on the chewing surfaces of back teeth help keep food and bacteria out of deep grooves.
Tooth-Coloured Fillings
If a cavity does appear, we repair it with fillings that blend in with the natural colour of the tooth.
Digital X-Rays
Low-dose digital X-rays, taken only when needed, help us find hidden cavities and see how adult teeth are coming in.
Urgent Care for Kids
Toothache, chipped tooth or a tooth knocked out? Call us right away and we will help you decide what to do next.

Your Child’s First Visit
The Canadian Dental Association recommends a first dental visit within six months of the first tooth appearing, or by about one year of age.
The first visit is short and relaxed. We count your child’s teeth, check the gums and bite, and talk with you about brushing, teething, thumb-sucking and healthy snacks. Older kids may have a gentle cleaning if they are ready.
Tip: talk about the visit in a positive way, bring a favourite toy, and book a morning appointment when your child is well rested.
Healthy Habits at Home
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste: a smear the size of a grain of rice for children under 3, and a pea-sized amount for ages 3 and up.
- Help your child brush until they can do a good job on their own.
- Start flossing once teeth touch each other.
- Keep sugary snacks and drinks to mealtimes and offer water in between.
- Avoid putting your child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice.
- Use a mouthguard for hockey, soccer and other contact sports.
Children’s Dentistry FAQ
At what age should my child first see a dentist?
The Canadian Dental Association recommends a first visit within six months of the first tooth coming in, or by about one year of age. Early visits help us spot problems early and help your child get comfortable at the dentist.
Do you see young children at Shore Side Dentistry?
Yes. Our dentists see patients of all ages, including toddlers, school-age children and teens, for checkups, cleanings, fillings and urgent care.
How often should my child have a checkup?
Most children do well with a checkup and cleaning about every six months. Your dentist may suggest a different schedule based on your child’s needs.
Are dental X-rays safe for children?
We use digital X-rays, which use a low dose of radiation, and we only take them when they are needed to check for hidden cavities or to see how adult teeth are developing.
What should I do if my child knocks out a tooth?
If it is a baby tooth, do not try to put it back in. Call us so we can check the area. If it is an adult tooth, hold it by the top (not the root), rinse it gently, and try to place it back in the socket or keep it in milk, then call us right away. Time matters.
What can I do if my child is nervous about the dentist?
Talk about the visit in a positive way and avoid words like “hurt” or “pain”. Let us know ahead of time, and we will go at your child’s pace and explain each step in simple words.
