What Counts as a Dental Emergency? (And What to Do)
Knocked-out teeth, swelling and severe pain need care fast. Here is what counts as a dental emergency and what to do until you are seen.
Most people feel much better within three to four days after a tooth is removed, and the gum usually closes over in one to two weeks. The bone underneath takes longer to fill in. The most important thing in the first few days is protecting the blood clot that forms in the socket, because it is what lets the area heal.
Wisdom teeth and teeth that needed surgical removal can take a little longer to heal than a simple extraction.
Dry socket happens when the blood clot is lost before the area heals, exposing the bone. It usually shows up two to four days after the extraction as pain that gets worse instead of better, sometimes spreading to the ear, along with a bad taste or smell. It is treatable, so call your dentist if you notice these signs.
If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest emergency room.
If a tooth has been removed, ask your dentist about replacing it. A gap can let nearby teeth shift over time. Options include dental implants, bridges and dentures.
