Early Signs of Gum Disease You Should Not Ignore

Gum Health | Shore Side dental Oakville

The earliest signs of gum disease are gums that bleed when you brush or floss, gums that look red or swollen, and bad breath that does not go away. Gum disease often causes no pain in its early stages, which is why many people do not notice it until it has progressed. Caught early, it can usually be treated and reversed.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums and the bone that support your teeth. It starts when plaque builds up along the gumline. The early stage is called gingivitis. If it is not treated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the gums pull away from the teeth and the supporting bone is lost. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Early Warning Signs

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Bad breath or a bad taste that does not go away
  • Gums that look like they are pulling back from your teeth
  • Teeth that feel loose or look like they have shifted
  • A change in how your teeth fit together when you bite

Who Is More at Risk?

Anyone can develop gum disease, but some things increase the risk, including smoking, diabetes, some medications, pregnancy, and a family history of gum problems. Skipping regular cleanings also makes it easier for plaque and tartar to build up.

What You Can Do at Home

  • Brush twice a day with a soft toothbrush, angling the bristles towards the gumline
  • Floss or use interdental brushes once a day
  • Do not ignore bleeding gums; it is a sign to clean more carefully and book a checkup
  • Keep up with regular dental exams and cleanings
