Some questions regarding dentures that we receive include, “What are the differences between partial and complete dentures?” and “Do I have to be a certain age to be eligible for dentures?” In today’s blog, we provide those answers— and why it matters to your smile.

What are the Differences Between Partial and Complete Dentures?

The breakdown of the differences between partial and complete dentures are as follows:

Partial Dentures

Defined as a removable partial denture or bridge, partial dentures typically consist of replacement teeth attached to a natural-looking base designed to blend in with the colour of your gums.

Sometimes connected by a metal framework that holds the partial denture in place, partial dentures are recommended when one or multiple natural teeth remain in either the upper or lower jaw. This fills the gaps between teeth in a natural-looking way while simultaneously preventing surrounding teeth from becoming misaligned.

Some partial dentures are removable and, rather than having a bridge cemented in place, can be clipped in through clasps on adjacent teeth.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures, on the other hand, is a full plastic base that is designed to replace both gum tissue and missing teeth.

Touting a full set of either porcelain or plastic teeth, complete dentures are fastened to the mouth by forming a seal with the gums or by being attached to dental implants that are surgically implemented in the jaws.

Perfect for patients with no or very little remaining natural teeth yet, dentures are a convenient and natural-looking replica that function the same as normal teeth to improve quality of life.

Who is a Candidate for Partial or Complete Dentures?

A common misconception is that one has to be a certain age to qualify for dentures. The fact is that anyone, regardless of age, is eligible for dentures if they have a number of missing teeth!

Regardless of if you are seeking partial or complete dentures, our team will take measurements and molds of the mouth to create them. Dentures require the same care as natural teeth; our team will direct you on how to take the best care of yours.

We love nothing more than seeing patients’ self-confidence and comfort skyrocket after receiving their dentures!
